Confidence Building - How It's Done!

Today’s post is not necessarily linked directly to apprenticeships, but it certainly is applicable to them. Whether you want one, are doing one, have done one or simply want to learn, you’re in the right place. Keep reading!
Confidence is a tricky subject. Naturally, you either have it, or you don’t. BUT…
There are so many ways you can improve self-confidence; when going into the workplace with your apprenticeship, it is important you're as confident as you can be to ensure that you shine.
Don’t get me wrong - it’s much easier said than done. I myself am definitely not the most confident person, but I’d like to be as helpful as possible to anyone feeling a bit nervy about an interview, or their first day on the new job!
Confidence? Already got it.
It sounds ridiculous, but sometimes the way to be confident is to pretend you already are. Sure enough, keep on acting and you may find you genuinely do feel more self-assured and relaxed afterwards!
Practice walking with your head up, shake someone's hand firmly (although please not too firmly, you may break their hand) and make the effort to talk to someone new or ask questions.
Make The Effort To Realise YOU ARE GREAT!
Everyone has personal hangups - it’s only natural. I’ve never met someone in my life who has been 100% confident about themselves… not ever. I know it sounds cliche and a bit cringey, but everyone has their own individual qualities. Sure, someone might be beautiful, clever or amazing at football (random, I know) but they could also be insecure about their hair, fail a GCSE or be absolutely rubbish at something else.
Nobody is perfect, and you can’t be the best at everything, unfortunately.
What I’m trying to say is: focus on YOU. Forget what your neighbour's doing, and remember the things you personally radiate. Make the most of what you can do, not the things you can’t do.
Think Before You Speak
This may sound strange, but it’s oh-so-true. I used to be the shyest child on earth - if someone I didn’t know spoke to me or asked me a question, I’d resemble a rabbit caught in the headlights.
And, any fellow shy people will know that if you mumble something, mispronounce something or just say something plain wrong, it will be the bane of the rest of your life.
My advice is: relax! Chill out, breathe, think through what you’re going to say and speak slowly. You’ll feel better for it!
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Much easier said than done, I know. But, try your hardest to do something new that you wouldn’t normally do.
Making slight changes, whether it’s donning a pink fluffy coat you’d usually be too embarrassed to wear, or joining a new sports team… these little things will all help to boost your confidence. It sounds unrelated, but confidence is key when applying to apprenticeships, being interviewed or meeting your new team of colleagues!
And Just Remember... You Are NORMAL!
At the end of the day, the world is always going to be full of different people - it would be boring if it wasn’t!
Whether wildly confident or crazy quiet, everyone has their differences. Learn to accept yourself, immerse yourself in different personalities around you. Being around others is a very positive thing. Everyone tends to find new or different things nerve racking.
